Rajasthan Royals have are rich history of experimenting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and starting new trends with their innovative plays. One such incident came when RR management promoted Ravichandran Ashwin to the top-order last IPL 2022, which caught a few teams by surprise.

However, in IPL 2023, they did one better and sent Ashwin as the opener against Punjab Kings.

Last evening against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), R Ashwin was promoted into the top order, with his side reeling at 88 for 3. Ashwin scored a quick-fire 30 off 22, which helped his side post 175 runs.

Interestingly, former West Indies opener and RCB legend Chris Gayle was against Ashwin's promotion.  Speaking on Jio Cinema, Gayle said that RR should have sent a proper batter in a tight situation.

Here's what Gayle said

“They (Rajasthan Royals) do this often. Send Ashwin ahead of a proper batsmen. I’m against it. You have a left arm spinner bowling when you send Ashwin in. It could’ve been a different scenario,”

Gayle, who backed Ashwin to pin down CSK batters in the second innings, did exactly that, claiming two wickets in his four-overs spell, helping his side to a memorable three-run win.
