A spot in the Indian Test XI is becoming difficult for players to keep consistently given the depth of talent that the nation produces. The likes of Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sarfaraz Khan, and Priyank Panchal struggle to fight for a spot in the squad, despite dishing out runs in domestic circuit season after season.

Within the Indian team, the competition is cut-throat with the likes of KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and KS Bharat fighting for one spot. Gill, who scored his maiden Test ton against Bangladesh in Chattogram, is likely to make place for the returning Rohit Sharma if he is declared fit for the second Test, which begins December 22.

Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif,  however, has put his weight behind Gill and stated that the Punjab-born will be tough to keep out of XI if he consistently performs.

Speaking to Sony Sports Network, Kaif indicted that Iyer or KL might be dropped for Gill.

"You will not be able to stop such a player for a long time, whether you have to drop KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer for that, the place will get created. He is looking better and better whenever he is given the opportunity. The Test match is after three days, Rohit Sharma might not come as well,"

The second and final Test will be played at Dhaka, with India leading the series 1-0.
