Former Australian captain, Michael Clarke has come in support of under-confident KL Rahul, who was recently dropped from the Indian squad for the third Test against Australia.

KL Rahul has been underperforming for quite some time now and was below par in the first two Test against Australia. As a result, the team management decided to drop him for the ongoing Test match and was replaced by Shubman Gill in the side.

Speaking to RevSportz, former captain stated that he reckons KL Rahul is a gifted player, and if he was the captain of the side, he'll come out fighting for KL Rahul.

“I really like KL Rahul. He is a great young man and an extremely gifted player. India is winning at the moment so if I was the captain, I would be fighting for him. I would be saying, ‘We are winning, I know he is not at his best but we can afford to keep him in the team right now. He is a good player, he will train hard enough and he is going to come back for us," Clarke said.

He added: “If the team is winning I think he can be keeping players that aren’t performing for a little bit longer. So I will be fighting for KL Rahul."

Clarke also said that he felt sorry for KL Rahul with the unfortunate way he was dismissed in the second innings of the Delhi Test.

“I felt so sorry for him the way he got out. Sometimes when it rains, it pours. You look around the field when batting and it feels like there are 20 fielders. Other times it doesn’t matter, every time you hit it, seems to go into a gap."

It can be said that Shubman Gill has failed to capitalise on the opportunity given to him. In the ongoing Test, he has scored just 26 runs across two innings.
