IPL 2023 belongs to one man - Shubman Gill. The talented Gujarat Titans opener has taken his game to the next level, piling on truckloads of runs in the ongoing IPL season.
The India opener has already slammed 3 centuries this season and became only the second Indian after Virat Kohli to cross 800-run mark in IPL. A player considered more as a Test and ODI specialist, Gill has broken the norms and averages a staggering 60.79, and has struck at 156.43 this IPL season.
At present, Gill has 851 IPL runs, and he still has one more match to go (the final with CSK). Gill has a great chance to break Kohli's record of 973 runs in a single IPL season, the most by any batter in the history of this tournament.
Gill will have to score 122 runs to break Kohli's world-famous record, and former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar feels that Gill can go past Kohli in the final of the IPL 2023.
Here's what Gavaskar said:
“Yes it can happen. It looks possible. If Gujarat bat first then Gill will have a big opportunity. If Chennai bat first get all out for 180 then 122 will look impossible," Gavaskar told India Today.
He added: "Records are meant to be broken. And this is a record unlike Sachin Tendulkar’s run in Test cricket or Muttiah Muralitharan’s 800 Test wickets, those are the ones which will be very difficult to break. But here it is all about 122 runs. If Gujarat bat first then it can definitely happen."
Gujarat Titans will take on MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 28.
