Cameron Green's inclusion in the Australian ICC T20 World Cup 2022 squad is being backed by several former players after the former replaced the injured Josh Inglis on Wednesday. Inglis suffered a freak hand injury while playing gold, forcing him out of the marquee tournament.

Green beat potential contenders like Alex Carey, Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, and Nathan Ellis to stake a claim in the 15-man Australian squad, which raises concerns over the lack of a backup wicketkeeper for Matthew Wade.

Inglis was the second keeper-batter in the squad..

Former Australian great Adam Gilchrist has endorsed Green's inclusion over others. The 50-year-old spoke with SEN WA Breakfast lauding the all-rounder's ability to bat in any position gives him an advantage.

"It’s an opportune time to get Green in. That was an extra bit of coverage that was very good, and you could say Green could do the same, but I don’t think ‘Greeny’ is going to throw the mitts on if (Matthew) Wade goes down."

The three-time World Cup-winning player expected Green to play in the XI against New Zealand.

However, skipper Aaron Finch dismissed any possibility of Green featuring in Australia's tournament opener on Saturday at the SCG.

Finch confirmed that David Warner will don the gloves if Wade gets injured.
