'Biggest Blunder A Franchise Has Made,' Former CSK All-Rounder Mocks KKR To Let Go of Shubman Gill

The last 5-6 months have been like a dream for Gujarat Titans and Indian opener Shubman Gill, who is going through the purplest patch of all purple patches ever. He has been scoring runs and breaking records for fun in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023), due to which the defending champions reached the tournament's finale.

This year, Gill became the second-ever Indian to slam more than 800 runs in a single season of the IPL. And that's not it; he was as spectacular as this season last year, helping the Titans lift the trophy in their first attempt.

Before joining GT, the young prodigy was with the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders, who bought Gill in 2018 after the world first saw him in the Under-19 World Cup. Initially, they under-utilised him because of more prominent names in their setup and then decided to let go of him.

Former Kiwi all-rounder Scott Styris coined KKR's decision to let go of Gill as the biggest blunder done by an IPL franchise. He also stated that Royal Challengers Bangalore did a sin when they parted ways with KL Rahul after IPL 2016.

"I still believe that his release from KKR will go down as the biggest blunder a franchise has made. The only other one was KL Rahul from RCB. However, there is age advantage here. Gill is still a very young man, he has got a lot of growth in his game," Styris said on JioCinema.

The Kiwi all-rounder also elaborated on how the 23-year-old opening batter is constructing his innings like his his predecessor does.

"We have seen the evolution of Baby GOAT, from his KKR days to now in GT. He was getting starts, and out of nowhere, he would get out. But he is converting those. He has made the adjustments to his game. He has taken the responsibility, he is happy to be the mainstay of this batting line-up. And he is looking like Virat Kohli back in the day as well, in the sense that he is in total control of his game. He is not having to thrash the ball or go after the bowling. He just hits the bad ball," Styris said.

Gill will take the field for GT for the last time this season on Monday, when his side take on Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 Final. After the big-bucks clash, the GT maestro will fly to England for the World Test Championship 2023 Final.
