In an unfortunate turn of events, young Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who was recently ruled out of the Australia series, is set to miss plenty of action in the coming months. As reported by the Times Of India, Iyer will undergo a back surgery and might take five to six months to regain full fitness.

Therefore, he is expected to be ruled out from not only the IPL 2023 but also the World Test Championship final, to be held at the Oval in June.

"Iyer has been advised to go for surgery. He is keen to get operated by a specialist in London, but if there is a decent option in India, then the surgery could take place here also," a source told TOI.

Despite being a gutsy cricketer, the Mumbai batter has recently miss plenty of action due to frequent injury setbacks.

After a shoulder injury ruled him out of the T20 World Cup 2021, a lower back injury sidelined him from the New Zealand home series earlier this year. Although he made a comeback in the Australia Tests, a recurrence of the back injury has further derailed his international career.

Meanwhile, Iyer's absence could be a massive blow for his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, who are searching for his alternative for captaincy. As per some reports, Nitish Rana and Shardul Thakur are front-runners to lead KKR in the IPL this season.

On the other hand, India will be devoid of one of their key middle-order batters if the 28-year-old doesn't turn up for the WTC final. However, the Men in Blue will be relieved if he becomes fully fit before the World Cup, as he plays a crucial role for the team in the 50-over format.
