Defending champions Australia suffered a huge defeat in their opening match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. The Aaron Finch-led side fell 89 runs short of New Zealand, thus sustaining a massive blow to their net run rate.

The hosts compensated for some of the damage by handing Sri Lanka a seven-wicket defeat in their subsequent outing. However, their net run rate continues to languish in the negatives, as they stand at number four on the Group 1 points table.

The Australians will now face Ireland at The Gabba on October 31 to keep their campaign going. Ahead of the crucial fixture, captain Aaron Finch talked about the importance of net run rate and how it can impact his team's fortunes this tournament. He also claimed that the team’s primary focus is to win their remaining two group games.

Here's what Finch stated

"Yeah, I think you have to earn the right to go after a run-rate performance. We’ve seen how damaging Ireland can be if you give them a sniff in a game, so you never go into a game thinking about things like that."

“All we’ve got to do is try and focus on winning two games, and hopefully some things fall our way.”
