Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald has come in support of skipper Aaron Finch who has been going through a rough patch since the start of the year.

Finch endured a slow innings against Sri Lanka, wherein he scored a painstaking 31* off 42 deliveries and the Australian blushes were saved by Marcus Stoinis who bludgeoned his way to a quick-fire 18-ball 59*.

Former Australian cricketers like Allan Border has criticised Finch's innings and has called for Steve Smith to replace Finch in the playing XI.

However, McDonald has now launched a strong defence in support of his skipper and has backed him to finish the tournament on a high.

"(Finch) was selected in the team, he's our captain, so I guess that says everything about the way we internally view where he's at. He didn't have the greatest night against Sri Lanka and he's been pretty fortnight in his views on that," McDonald said.

McDonald also opines on Smith's place in the side

"We've got 15 players in the side, it's a challenge to pick eleven. The surface and the opposition probably shift our thinking in what that look like. He has definitely come up in the conversation and there's a role for him."

After sharing points with England due to their game getting abandoned, Australia's next challenge will be up against Ireland on Monday.
