Aakash Chopra Points at India's 'Bad' spin play

Former India batter Aakash Chopra did not chicken out from commenting on India's spin woes, blaming 'flat' pitches in ODIs and T20Is for their struggle.

Playing the tweakers have been a cross to bear for Indian batters. While the spin-friendly wickets in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy have turned their path more treacherous, the lack of application has been pretty evident from their side.

As per Chopra, if India does not rectify the problem soon, things are not going to get any better and will go further downhill.

Here's what Chopra said:

"The play against spin has become extremely bad. If our performance against spin is going to be like this, our situation is going to be bad. One thing is certain that if the opposition team is not able to play spin, we also don't play spin well. If we start from 2021, if we talk about the story of the last three years, you will find that we have been extremely ordinary. Everyone's average versus spin has come down to less than half.

"Why are we not playing spin well? Because we play so much T20 and ODI cricket, we play on such flat pitches. On the same pitch, the openers had a 225-run partnership. We are scoring double-hundreds in ODIs and centuries in T20Is, we play daily in those conditions. So the batting becomes slightly difficult when the ball starts turning and staying low and we are not used to that difficulty."

Be it Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, or Matthew Kuhnemann, all of them have kept the India batters on their toes in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. With the next Test scheduled at Ahmedabad on March 9, it will be interesting to see if the spin crisis hit India again.
