The prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed its 100th individual century earlier this year through a scintillating 104-run knock from Gujarat Titans captain and opening batter Shubman Gill. The youngster hammered down 104 runs from just 55 deliveries, clattering nine boundaries and six sixes in the process against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Incidentally, Sai Sudharsan, Gill’s opening partner in the match, also notched up a century of his own to extend IPL’s individual ton tally to 101 on the same day.

When Shubman Gill completed 100 centuries for IPL

In match number 59 of the IPL 2024 season, hosts Gujarat Titans piled up 231-3 from 20 overs after getting invited to bat first. Opening batter and captain Shubman Gill smeared 104 of those runs from his own end from just 55 deliveries to notch up his fourth IPL century, and the 100th individual ton among all batters in the history of the tournament.

Mere moments later, his opening partner Sai Sudharsan brought up his maiden IPL and T20 century, and extended the individual century count of IPL to 101 tons. Moreover, their partnership of 210 runs also marked the highest-ever opening stand in IPL, as well as third-highest for any wicket in the prestigious history of the tournament.

Twin tons from Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharan elevated Gujarat Titans’ total to a colossal 231-3 from their 20 overs against the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur.

The total turned out to be a match-winning one for the Titans, as CSK batters collectively accrued just 196-8 in the run-chase to fall 35 runs short of their target. Mohit Sharma (3-31) and Rashid Khan (2-38) played starring roles with the ball for the Titans by claiming five wickets between them after the opening strikes from Sandeep Warrier and senior paceman Umesh Yadav.

Overall, IPL’s individual century tally remains at 101 tons. Players from the RCB franchise have amassed 19 of them, the highest among all, and they are followed by Rajasthan Royals (17) and Punjab Kings (15). The Gujarat Titans, having entered the IPL fray in 2022, have so far combined five hundreds, with dashing opening batter Shubman Gill himself amounting to four of those tons.
