With Rohit Sharma likely to miss the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) on November 22, all eyes are now on Abhimanyu Easwaran. He’s not a new name for those who follow domestic cricket, but the international spotlight has somehow always slipped past him.

Who is Abhimanyu Easwaran?

Abhimanyu Easwaran’s been right on the edge of the Indian team, always close but never quite in the game, the true “bridesmaid, never the bride” story in Indian cricket.

A Run Machine in Domestic Cricket

Easwaran’s First-Class stats speak for themselves. He’s amassed 7,674 runs in 101 matches at a stunning average of 48.87 with 27 centuries and 29 fifties. He’s been Bengal’s batting mainstay, renowned for his patience and technique.

Whether it’s grinding out runs or handling pressure, Easwaran has proven he’s got what it takes. The only thing missing? A shot in the Indian team's playing XI which now seems close.

Years of Waiting on the Sidelines

Easwaran has been close to the Indian squad for a while. He was a standby for the 2021 Test series against England and the World Test Championship final. Each time, he just missed the final cut. Despite shining in domestic games, he’s had to watch others get their chances while he stayed in the background.

A Tough Outing with India A vs Australia A

Easwaran recently played for India A in a two-match unofficial Test series against Australia A. But things didn’t quite go his way. He scored just 19 runs in total across two innings in the first match and then managed a three-ball duck and in the first innings and 17 runs off 31 balls in the second innings of the second match.

Will Easwaran Finally Make The Cut?

While his India A stint was dismal, Easwaran’s domestic form has been top-notch. But he’s got some tough competition for the spot. KL Rahul, with all his experience, is also in the running, though his recent form has been abysmal. So, the question for Team India is: do they go with the in-form Easwaran or stick to the experienced Rahul?

With Rohit likely out, Easwaran might finally get his long-awaited debut. For a player who’s been on the sidelines for years, it’s the chance to prove himself on the big stage.
