A new website jiostar.com has been launched as part of the merger between Reliance and Hotstar. It is speculated to be an OTT platform, however, no official confirmation as been made yet. Incidentally, the JioHotstar domain owners, siblings Jainam and Jivika Jain had offered the same to Reliance for free on November 11, i.e., just a day earlier.

Reliance’ primary streaming app, i.e., JioCinema, has been streaming Indian Premier League (IPL) matches for free. However, back in October this year, it was confirmed that Reliance will be discontinuing IPL streaming from the 2025 edition of the tournament following its merger with Star.

JioStar website goes live amid domain controversy

Dubai based siblings Jainam and Jivika Jain had purchased the domain jioHotstar.com from a Delhi-based app developer. Previously, the app developer had also offered the domain name to either Reliance Industries or Viacom18 for a particular fee to fund his own education, as reported by livemint.com.

Apparently, after purchasing the controversial domain from the developer, the Dubai-based siblings have now made a fresh offer to Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance conglomerate. As per the report, the siblings are now selling the domain to Reliance for free.

JioHotstar controversy explained

An anonymous app developer purchased the domain name Jiostar.com after reading rumors of a possible merger between Jio Cinema and Hotstar. Intending to sell the domain rights for a sum of Rs.1 crore for funding his own college education, the Reliance Industries, in turn, refused to entertain any deal with the developer.

He later sold the domain to 13-year-old Jainam and 10-year-old Jivika Jain, as the two Dubai-based siblings were willing to help him out over his education.

Reliance Industries holds the streaming rights of IPL matches, while Hotstar streams matches of ICC events. Following their merger, reports indicate that all sporting events, including IPL 2025, will now be available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. However, it remains to be determined as to what app will exactly be streaming and what channels will be broadcasting IPL 2025 next year.
