Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting organized a reunion with his former teammates this past weekend in remembrance of the departed souls of Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds.

A number of former Aussie cricketers from Punter's era like Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Greg Blewett, Adam Gilchrist, Darren Lehmann, Shane Watson, Brett Lee, got together at Victoria's Mornington Peninsula in what is likely to be an annual event from now on.

This move from Ponting stems from his desire to protect 'mateship' as well as celebrate the lives of two former teammates Warne and Symonds.

Ponting still regrets that he couldn't tell Warne how much he loved him.

'I didn't say that, but I wish I did,'

Greg Blewett on the new tradition

"With Warnie going like he did, and I think because we've been through what we've been through, that was a bit of a catalyst for getting us all together,'

"One of the great things about Australian cricket all in all is the mateship through it all, so to be able to reflect on some of those times – it was quite an emotional weekend, actually,"

"We certainly raised a few glasses to some absent friends and it probably made especially this year a bit more special being the first year."

A tragic year for Australia

It has been a tragic year for Australia cricket, with the likes of Rodney Marsh, Warne and Symonds tragically leaving this world.

While Marsh succumbed to a heart attack on March 04, Warne too died on the same day after he was found unconscious at his villa in Thailand.

Symonds, meanwhile, passed away due to a fatal accident in May.
