The fifth Test of the India vs Australia series, often dubbed the "Pink Test," witnessed a lighthearted moment featuring Virat Kohli that offered some comic relief amidst the intense cricketing action at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Kohli, who has had a lean run throughout the series, managed to survive early jitters in this Test. In the 8th over of India’s innings, he narrowly escaped a golden duck when Steve Smith’s contentious catch was overturned by the TV umpire. The "NOT OUT" decision brought a roar from the SCG crowd and gave Kohli a much-needed reprieve.
However, 'King Kohli' was also seen batting a sharp eye to the ball on the ground. As the umpire prepared to hand the ball back to the Australian bowler, there was confusion about the ball's whereabouts. Kohli, with his sharp observation, quickly pointed out that the ball was tucked away in his pocket. Kohli quickly chirped, "Where is the ball? You got the ball in your pocket."
Kohli's voice was caught in the stump mic and his witty gesture was met with chuckles from the players and the umpire, easing the tension on the field.
Australia Dominates Session 1, India Loses Openers
For Australia, the Pink Test has been dominated by their lethal new-ball bowling. Yet, Kohli’s cheeky intervention added a lighter note to an otherwise fiercely competitive match.
As the day progressed, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul had a disappointing start with the bat, getting out early. However, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli seemed to be settling in well at the crease. They formed a partnership of 40 runs, but Gill made a careless mistake in a brain-fade moment and lost his wicket to Nathan Lyon which left India struggling at 57 for 3 just before lunch.
