In a controversial turn of events, Steve Smith’s catch at second slip to dismiss Virat Kohli on Day 1 of the fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground was deemed not out by the third umpire. The TV umpire argued that the ball had slipped off Smith’s fingers and rolled on the ground, but fans were left divided on the internet.

India, under the captaincy of Jasprit Bumrah, opted to bat first after winning the toss for the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy scheduled at Sydney Cricket Ground.

In Rohit Sharma’s absence, KL Rahul walked out to open with Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, Mitchell Starc got the first breakthrough in Rahul. Jaiswal followed his cue to be dismissed by Scott Boland.

Virat Kohli survives a controversial call by TV umpire

In the 8th over of the first inning, Virat Kohli walked out to bat under tons of pressure. With his Test career on the line, the veteran batter was expected to pull off a masterclass.

However, on the very first delivery that he faced against Scott Boland, Kohli nicked an outside the off-stump delivery that dropped to Steve Smith at second slip. Smith showed quick reflexes and claimed a clean catch. However, replays suggested otherwise.

In the replay, the TV umpire ruled that the ball slipped out of the fielder’s grip and rolled to the ground. While the call was tricky, the umpire gave the benefit of the doubt to the batter, allowing Kohli a lifetime.

Meanwhile, fans on the internet were divided. While some questioned the technology standards, a few showed support for Virat Kohli.

Australia currently has the upper hand over India after a successful first hour of play in the first session of Day 1. With both openers back in the hut, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli are tasked to rebuild the innings.
