Shubman Gill silenced his doubters by slamming a swashbuckling century on his captaincy debut against England. Gill hit a hundred in the first Test at Leeds, a feat Virat Kohli achieved previously under similar circumstances, and fans compared the two individuals on social media.

When Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the Test format last month, Shubman Gill was handed over the responsibility to not only succeed Rohit as captain but also replace Kohli at no.4

The two vacant places were tough to fill, but Gill absorbed the pressure and made a statement in the first inning of the Leeds Test vs England.

Yashasvi Jaiswal set the platform with a stunning 101 off 159 balls. Shubman Gill capitalised on the momentum to hit a century of his own. He scored a hundred off just 140 balls and joined an elite list of Indian batters who hit a hundred on their captaincy debut.

The last person to achieve this feat was Virat Kohli, who hit a hundred against Australia in 2014 on his captaincy debut. As Gill follows in the footsteps of Kohli in Test cricket, fans on social media compared the duo’s similar career trajectory and laid high hopes for the 25-year-old batter.

The job isn’t done for Gil. He is approaching 150 with Rishabh Pant by his side. Pant also scored a half century, and India crossed the 350-run mark on Day 1 itself.

The England bowlers look clueless so far. Only skipper Ben Stokes has managed to get 2 wickets, with Brydon Carse getting the wicket of KL Rahul.
