When Yashasvi Jaiswal bats, you can almost sense something special brewing. On Day 1 of the IND vs WI 2nd Test in Delhi, the young left-hander turned slow applause into a standing ovation as he smashed his seventh Test hundred.
He started slow, almost old-school but by the time he reached three figures, it was full-on “Jais-ball” mode, all flamboyance, no fear.
Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a brilliant hundred
Coming off a quiet first Test in Ahmedabad, Yashasvi Jaiswal looked hungry from ball one. He reached his fifty off 82 balls, soaking up the early pressure and then unleashed his best. Another 63 balls later, the century arrived. This century placed Jaiswal in elite company.
Before turning 24, only Don Bradman (12), Sachin Tendulkar (11) and Garfield Sobers (9) had scored more Test tons. The next group includes giants like Graeme Smith, Alastair Cook, and Kane Williamson, all with seven, the same as Jaiswal now.
It is worth mentioning that Jaiswal and KL Rahul took their time early, respecting the conditions and the bowlers. India’s scoring rate looked modest in the first hour but as they say, patience is the name of the game in Tests. And once the shine wore off the ball, Jaiswal took matters into his own hands.
Right after lunch, Jaiswal shifted gears. He took on Jayden Seales with back-to-back boundaries and suddenly, the crowd came alive. It was as if someone flipped a switch as every ball was met by the middle of his bat, every drive and pull oozed confidence. The young southpaw reached the three-figure mark off 145 balls.
India in total command
Even when KL Rahul fell to Jomel Warrican’s sharp turner, India didn’t lose shape. Jaiswal has held his nerve, reading the spin beautifully and built another solid stand with Sai Sudharsan, who has looked equally assured. The two are batting India into a position of strength.
At the time of writing, India are 205/1 after 53 overs with Jaiswal unbeaten on 105 and Sudharsan on 63. With this platform, India look well on track to post a mountain of runs and seal the series 2-0.
