Sri Lanka Women continued to make waves in the Women's T20 World Cup 2023, securing a seven-wicket victory against Bangladesh Women in an exciting match played in Cape Town.

The Lankans solidified their position as a formidable force in the tournament following their stunning upset against South Africa Women in the opening match.

Mostary helped Bangladesh Women reach a respectable total

The match got off to a dramatic start as Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, only to be met with an early setback as opener Murshida Khatun was run out for a duck after a brilliant direct hit by Inoka Ranaweera.

Sobhana Mostary and wicket-keeper Shamima Sultana attempted to lay the foundation for the innings, but their efforts were short-lived as Shamima was stumped by Anushka Sanjeewani off the bowling of Ranasinghe.

Bangladesh's skipper, Nigar Sultana, took the crease and joined forces with Mostary for a 35-run partnership before being sent packing by Chamari Athapaththu for 29, their top-scorer of the innings.

The remainder of the Bangladesh innings was plagued by regular wickets falling, making it difficult for them to put together any meaningful partnerships. Despite the obstacles, Bangladesh managed to eke out a score of 126/8 after their 20 overs.

Oshadi Ranasinghe shone with her figures of 3/23 in her four overs. Sri Lanka may have felt optimistic about their chances, but Marufu Akter had other ideas, as she sent Athpaththu, Vishmi Gunaratne, and Anushka Sanjeewani packing without conceding a single run, leaving Sri Lanka in disarray at 25/3.

However, Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshi de Silva stepped up to the plate and rescued the Sri Lanka innings, bringing up their 100-run partnership in the 19th over and securing the Lankans' second consecutive win at Newlands.

This victory puts Sri Lanka at the forefront of Group A and solidifies their status as a team to watch out for in the tournament.
