India took a substantial step towards securing their place in the much-anticipated ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 Final after a commanding performance led to their thumping victory over Australia in the recently concluded Nagpur Test

The match's outcome appreciably narrowed the gap between the two contending teams, with Australia atop the WTC standings, possessing a 70.83% points percentage.

At the same time, India trail closely behind with a 61.67% points percentage, with their win effectively eliminating England and the West Indies from the race for the WTC final, leaving Sri Lanka and South Africa, occupying third and fourth place, respectively, in the points table, as the only remaining contenders.

Regarding the WTC Final qualification scenarios, Australia currently sit at the forefront with 70.83% of the possible points, facing India in three of the four Tests of their away series.

Therefore, the best possible outcome for the Aussies would be a 75.43% points percentage finish.

Despite their defeat in the first Test against India, Australia still hold the advantage as they would secure a place in the final with a minimum of a 59.64% points percentage finish, provided they do not incur any points lost on the over-rate penalty.

A win in any of the next three Tests would see Australia attain a minimum points percentage of 64.91%.

In contrast, a draw would see them finish with 61.40% (assuming no points are lost on the over-rate), both scenarios still sufficient for them to make it to the final ahead of Sri Lanka, who can only achieve a maximum of 61.11%.

On the other hand, India, with 61.67% of the possible points, face Australia in the remaining three of their four Tests on home soil. Therefore, the best possible outcome for India would be a 68.06% points percentage finish.

India's victory in the first Test against Australia has brought them closer to securing a spot in the final.

They need just two more wins in the series to guarantee a minimum of 62.50% points percentage, which would eliminate Sri Lanka from the race.

Any combination of results in the next three Tests that falls short of two wins, or any other possible outcome, would see India relying on the results of New Zealand vs Sri Lanka series.
