Mitchell Marsh bludgeons through the covers for a boundary vs Bangladesh (AP)
Brief Scores: Bangladesh: 306-8 (50 overs) [Towhid Hridoy: 74 (79), Najmul Hossain Shanto: 45 (57); Adam Zampa 2/32 (10), Sean Abbott 2/61 (10)] lost to Australia: 307-2 (44.4 overs) [Mitchell Marsh: 177* (132), Steve Smith: 63* (64); Taskin Ahmed 1/61 (10), Mustafizur Rahman 1/76 (9.4)] by eight wickets.
Australia extended their unbeaten World Cup 2023 run to seven matches as they head into the semi-finals off the back of a Mitchell Marsh special against Bangladesh.
Collective efforts take BAN to 306
Openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das slapped 36 each, while stand-in skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto produced 45 runs as Bangladesh raced over 100 in just above 16 overs. Towhid Hridoy pounced over top-order’s calculated foundation with a near run-a-ball 74 at number four. The cricketer whacked two sixes and five boundaries, and formed crucial partnerships with Shanto (45), Mahmudullah (32), Mushfiqur Rahim (21) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (29) in the second half of the innings.
Hridoy’s 74 and lower-order mayhem eventually catapulted Bangladesh’s total to a competitive 306-8 from their 50 overs.
Among Australian bowlers, Adam Zampa claimed two wickets in his 10-over economical spell, while Sean Abbott struck twice during his 10-over expensive spell. Marcus Stoinis also walked away with a wicket, that of top-scorer Hridoy after leaking away 45 runs from just his five overs.
Marsh’s ton makes lightwork of BAN’s fight
Bangladesh tasted early success when Taskin Ahmed cleaned up Australian opener Travis Head with the new-ball. However, they were made to wait nearly 20 overs for another wicket after David Warner fell victim to Mustafizur Rahman’s swing at 53.
Thereafter, Australian number three Mitchell Marsh unleashed a barrage of extraordinary boundaries and sixes during his career-best ODI knock.
The dynamic all-rounder bludgeoned 177 unbeaten runs off just 132 balls, and stormed Australia to an easy eight-wicket win alongside Steve Smith (63*) with more than five overs to spare.
