World Cup 2023 | Joe Root Becomes First Englishman To Unlock 'This' Milestone

England batting veteran Joe Root has completed 1,000 World Cup runs through the course of his latest knock against Pakistan in the 2023 edition. Arriving to the crease following an 82-run opening stand by Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow at the Eden Gardens, the English number three kept the scoreboard ticking alongside Ben Stokes for the third wicket.

Notably, Root became the first English cricketer in history to amass over 1,000 runs in World Cup matches, eclipsing former batsman Graham Gooch with his latest achievement.

Root becomes England’s most prolific World Cup player

Joe Root made his World Cup debut for England back during the 2015 edition of the tournament hosted by Australia and New Zealand. While the elegant right-hander managed to tally up a mere 202 runs in his maiden World Cup stint, the cricketer emerged as England’s highest-scorer in 2019 to underline their historic triumph at home.

Turning up for his side in their title-defense in 2023 as one of their senior-most members, Root failed to justify his inclusion as his lacklustre run with the bat turned out to be one of the major reasons behind their crashing exit from the semi-finals race. While the 32-year-old launched England’s crusade with sparkling half-centuries against New Zealand and Bangladesh, Root only managed to conjure 57 runs combined in his subsequent six innings of the tournament.

Regardless of his uninspiring returns with the bat, the senior batter has managed to scale 1,000 World Cup runs through the course of his cautious effort against Pakistan in England’s final league fixture in Kolkata.

Becoming the first Englishmen to breach the 1,000-run landmark figure in World Cup matches, here is a look at top five England cricketers with most runs at the grandest stage of the game:

Graham Gooch89721
Jonny Bairstow74720

Overall, Joe Root has compiled over 6,500 career ODI runs at an average of nearly 48, with 16 centuries and 39 additional fifty-plus scores to his name.

Having made his ODI debut in 2013 during an away series against India, the batting prodigy has so far turned up for his country in 171 matches.
