The defending champions England will play for pride as they are set to face their age-old Ashes rivals, Australia, in the 36th game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. While there might not be much at stake for England, Australia has a chance to secure two points and move closer to securing a spot in the semi-finals. The Three Lions will be keen to play the perfect spoilsport for the Aussies in Ahmedabad.

England's recent defeat against India dashed their hopes of reaching the semi-finals, leaving them at the bottom of the points table. On the other hand, Australia is coming into this game following a thrilling win against New Zealand, and they are determined to progress towards the knockout stage.

ENG vs AUS: Team Preview

England

Although England holds the title of reigning World Cup champions, they have been eliminated from semi-final contention after suffering five defeats in six matches, including four consecutive losses. Their solitary victory in this tournament came against Bangladesh, who also won't be making it to the semi-finals. Captain Jos Buttler and his team still have their pride to play for, and they also need to vie for qualification in the Champions Trophy.

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow have made starts but are yet to produce a substantial opening partnership. The middle order has been a source of disappointment in recent games, and the experienced trio of Joe Root, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes need to contribute big runs. Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, David Willey and Chris Woakes are capable hitters and must perform effectively in the lower middle order for England to have a chance in this contest.

Australia

Australia, on the other hand, is in good form with the bat. Their journey in the World Cup got off to a rocky start with consecutive losses to India and South Africa. However, they have rebounded with four consecutive wins against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. A victory over England would almost guarantee their place in the semi-finals.

Australia will be without all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh for this match. Marsh has returned home for personal reasons, while Maxwell is sidelined due to a concussion. Opener Travis Head's return from injury is a substantial boost for Australia, and he made an immediate impact by scoring a century in the match against New Zealand.

Marsh's absence may place more responsibility on all-rounders Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, particularly in the bowling department. In Marsh's absence, Steve Smith is expected to reclaim the number three slot, even though his recent form is a concern. The form of Mitchell Starc, who went wicketless in the last game against New Zealand, is also a worry.

ENG vs AUS: Ahmedabad Pitch Report

The Ahmedabad ground is known for its flat surface and a fast outfield. Considering the nature of the pitch, batters will enjoy batting on this track. Fast bowlers can initially benefit from swing and bounce, but as the game progresses, they will need to rely on their variations to take wickets on this pitch. Spinners, on the other hand, will enjoy significant assistance from the surface as the ball tends to turn and hold up during the middle overs.

In the two games played at this venue, successful run chases have been witnessed. The dew factor can make it challenging for bowlers in the latter half of the match. Consequently, the team winning the toss in this game is likely to opt for bowling first without hesitation, given the conditions of the pitch.

ENG vs AUS: Winner Prediction

England is currently grappling with a lack of form and confidence. Their renowned batting line-up has experienced a severe downturn in this competition. To stand a chance in this match, they must regroup and deliver a strong batting performance. In contrast, the Australian batters have been in exceptional form, arriving at this game with four consecutive victories. Based on their current form, the Aussies are clear favourites heading into this match.
