Shubman Gill notched up 34 runs for Team India against West Indies in the second ODI of the series in Bridgetown. The dynamic opener formed a 90-run stand with partner Ishan Kishan at the top, and his dismissal triggered a colossal batting collapse within the Indian camp as they slumped to 181 all out a couple of hours later in the game.

Notably, Gill managed to scale a new height in his ever-expanding ODI tally, as he went past Pakistan captain Babar Azam for a unique record in the format.

Gill soars past Babar Azam’s ODI record

Pakistan skipper and batting maverick Babar Azam seems to be scaling new ODI records for fun. Just a couple of months ago, the cricketer played his 100th ODI match for Pakistan. With 5,089 runs to his name, the 28-year-old surpassed Hashim Amla to become the highest run-aggregator after 100 ODI appearances. Notably, Azam was also on top of the run-scoring pile after 25 matches earlier in his career.

Shubman Gill has emerged as India's answer to Pakistan's run machine, as the dynamic opener seems to be achieving new ODI heights with every game.

Quite recently, Gill played the 25th ODI match of his career and ended up with more runs to his name than his Pakistani counterpart after the same number of appearances.

Next up, the 23-year-old scored 34 against West Indies in the second match of the three-game series. His innings was one of the saving graces of Team India, as only one other Indian batter outscored him in the game.

With his latest effort, Gill now sits at 1,352 runs from 26 ODI innings, thus going past Azam's 1,322 runs after his 26th game.

  • Babar Azam - 1,322 runs
  • Jonathan Trott - 1,303 runs
  • Fakhar Zaman - 1,275 runs

In the meantime, Gill will get a chance to enhance his ODI record even further as Team India gears up to face the West Indies in the deciding match of the series. The two teams will collide in match number three at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on August 1.
