After spending the entire opening session of the second Test without a wicket, West Indies may have won their first session of the series with a spirited fightback in the afternoon. They claimed three of India’s top-order batters, all within a short burst of seven overs, and denied well-set openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma their respective centuries.

Senior pacers Kemar Roach and Jason Holder got them the early breakthroughs before spinner Jomel Warrican joined the party by cleaning up Sharma. Team India reached 182-4 by the Tea break, with Virat Kohli at the crease.

WI vs IND Day 1, 2nd session: How did the session pan out?

Indian top-order fail to pile on early advantage

Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma failed to capitalize on their 121-run unbeaten stand from the morning session of the day. The two cricketers added just 18 more runs to their partnership in the afternoon, with free-flowing Jaiswal becoming India’s first casualty of the innings.

He scored a rapid 57 before getting trapped by a wide-length ball from Jason Holder. His skipper and partner Sharma hung around for a while to reach 80, while Shubman Gill registered his second failure of the series. The two batters were dismissed by Jomel Warrican and Kemar Roach, respectively, in successive overs.

Rahane departs amidst brewing partnership with Kohli

Amidst a brewing rescuing act between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, the latter lost his ground just at the stroke of Tea. Shannon Gabriel castled the senior batter for just eight runs.

What to expect from final session of Day 1?

As of now, four quick wickets from West Indies bowlers have set the Test match evenly poised.

In the upcoming sessions, India’s batting legend Virat Kohli will look to form crucial partnerships with middle-to-lower order to take his side towards a respectable total.

For West Indies, their bowlers will look to pile on their afternoon breakthroughs, as they see it as an opening to shoot out the Indians before stumps.
