In a remarkable turn of events, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has completed 2000 runs as an opener in Test cricket. The stylish Mumbai batter achieved the phenomenal feat on the opening day of the ongoing Test against West Indies at Port Of Spain, Trinidad. Sharma, who provided India with a great start through a breathtaking fifty, became the eleventh Indian opener to enter the 2000-run club in the purest format. Notably, Sunil Gavaskar tops the list with 9607 runs, including 33 hundreds and 42 fifties, at a magnificent average of 50.29.

Sharma's Test career has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. After having a dream debut against West Indies, the explosive batter underwent a torrid phase in Test cricket, struggling against the moving ball in his first overseas tour. Despite being shuffled throughout the batting order, Sharma couldn't live up to the expectations, letting the team down with his inconsistency.

However, things started taking a U-turn once he was promoted to the top-order after India moved on from Murali Vijay in the longest format. Since then, Sharma has showcased exemplary consistency, establishing himself as a key performer for the team across continents.

Regarding the game, India, after being put into bat, have got off to a flier, courtesy of breezy knocks from Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. As of writing, the hosts are 107 for no loss, with Sharma and Jaiswal batting on 61* and 40*, respectively.
