WI vs IND, 1st Test, 2nd Session | India Declare On 421, West Indies Off To a Shaky Start

Riding on flamboyant centuries from openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma and a useful contribution from Virat Kohli, team India posted a mammoth total of 421 runs before declaring their first innings in the ongoing Test match against West Indies in Dominica. The visitors lost Jaiswal and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession in the first session, but a crucial stand between Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja helped them breach the 400-run mark.

The second session began with India sitting in the driving seat, well-placed at 400 for four, with Kohli and Jadeja batting on 72* and 21*, respectively. However, the visitors had an undesirable start, losing Kohli to Rahkeem Cornwall in the 146th over. Although the talismanic batter looked set for a gritty hundred, his long stay at the middle was put to an end by the Windies spinner, who made him edge one straight to the leg slip.

After Kohli's departure, Jadeja and Ishan Kishan batted cautiously for around seven overs, as India declared their first innings on 421 for five.

In response, West Indies had a horrible start to their second innings, as Ravindra Jadeja trapped Tagenarine Chanderpaul plumb in front of the stumps for a sloth-paced 28-ball seven. Although the hosts tried to consolidate the innings, their efforts suffered a massive setback with the dismissal of skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, bamboozled by Ravichandran Ashwin for a 47-ball seven.

Raymon Reifer and Jermaine Blackwood negated any further casualty, as West Indies went for tea with 27 for two on the board. As they still trail by 244 runs, an innings defeat looks inevitable for the hosts, considering their fragile batting lineup.
