The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match between Dhaka Capitals and Rajshahi Warriors at Sylhet International Stadium on Saturday, December 27, was overshadowed by a tragic incident as Dhaka Capitals assistant coach Mahbub Ali Zaki collapsed on the field and later passed away.

What happened to Mahbub Ali Zaki ?

The match was about 20 minutes away from starting, with players warming up at opposite ends of the ground alongside the coaching staff, when Zaki suddenly fell to the ground. Immediate CPR was administered on-site, and he was rushed to Al Haramain Hospital in Sylhet.

Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save him, and his death was later confirmed by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Debashish Chowdhury. Officials suspect a heart attack or cardiac arrest, although Zaki had not reported any prior health issues.

In a mark of respect, all players wore black armbands during the match, and a minute's silence was observed before the start of the second innings. The mood at Sylhet International Stadium turned somber, with grief visible among both teams and the audience.

DC bowlers restrict Rajshahi to low-score despite emotional loss

Despite the tragic circumstances, the match went on as scheduled. Dhaka Capitals won the toss and elected to field against Rajshahi Warriors. The Capitals’ bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, restricting the opposition to a below-par total of 132/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Imad Wasim led the bowling attack with figures of 3/16, while pacers Salman Mirza, Ziaur Rahman Sharifi, and Mohammad Saifuddin claimed one wicket each. Spinners Nasir Hossain and Imad Wasim worked effectively and made it difficult for the Rajshahi batters to score.

For the Warriors, the top order struggled to build substantial partnerships. Opener Sahibzada Farhan departed for a golden duck, and the second opener Tanzid Hasan departed after making just 20 runs in 15 balls.

However, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto tried to stabilise the innings in the middle-order and made 37 runs of 28 balls at the strike-rate of 132.14. While Mushfiqur Rahim (24 runs off 23 balls) and Mohammad Nawaz (26 runs off 26 balls) started well, they could not convert them into bigger innings.

The disciplined bowling and tight fielding by the Dhaka Capitals kept the opposition under pressure throughout the innings.

Chasing the inning, Rajshahi Warriors did not have a start they wanted. They have lost their openers Saif Hassan and Usman Khan early on and are already reeling at 71/3.
