On the last day of the first Test between India and England at Headingley, players observed a minute-long silence before the start of play. Stars from both teams stood in line with black armbands around their sleeves to pay tribute to late India spinner Dilip Doshi, who passed away on June 23, 2025.
Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi died in London at the age of 77. A close friend confirmed the demise of Dilip Doshi and the BCCI also paid their respects on Tuesday, June 24.
Who Was Dilip Doshi?
Doshi made his Test debut for India at the age of 32 in 1979 and represented India in 33 Tests and 15 One-Day Internationals between 1979 and 1983 and ended his career with 114 Test wickets and 22 scalps in ODIs.
Doshi was also a key figure in domestic circuit as he amassed 898 wickets from 238 matches and also featured in county cricket.
India and England Players Wear Black Armbands for the Third Time in This Test
On Day 1, both teams walked onto the pitch wearing black armbands to honour the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash. The entire stadium prayed for the victims and expressed their condolences following the fatal crash on June 12. A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of 181 Indian nationals and 53 British citizens.
Meanwhile, on Day 3, India and England players again observed a minute’s silence before the start of play, this time to pay tribute to David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, who passed away at the age of 61.
BCCI Women Also Pay Tribute to Dilip Doshi
The India women’s team, currently in England, observed a minute-long silence ahead of their warm-up match against the ECB Select XI and will also wear black armbands in memory of Dilip Doshi.
The board took to Twitter where they confirmed that the India women's team will also pay their respect to the late India spinner.
