Australian teen sensation Sam Konstas, who had a fiery moment with Virat Kohli during his debut Test, has now gone on record calling the Indian legend one of his biggest idols. It is the kind of twist you don’t see coming, especially when you remember Kohli’s shoulder bump incident with Konstas that earned him a fine and a demerit point during the Border-Gavaskar clash.
Sam Konstas Picks Kohli’s Wrists While Creating His Perfect Cricketer
Now, with the dust settled and a few more Test innings under his belt, Sam Konstas has shown his mature side by tipping his hat to Kohli while creating his perfect cricketer.
Ahead of the first Test against the West Indies at Kensington Oval, the 19-year-old prodigy was asked to stitch together his perfect cricketer. And the names he picked were legendary.
“AB de Villiers with aggression... he hits 360 and takes the game on. Steve Smith – best player in the world in my opinion... big honour playing with him. Kohli – yeah, I feel his wrists are incredible, to be honest. The way he accesses the leg side... I’ve been growing up watching him play. Big idol,” Konstas said.
He also gave a cheeky nod to England’s Jos Buttler, thanking him for the batting tutorials.
“I’ve been watching quite a few videos... so thank you Buttler for those.”
But the Virat Kohli mention stood out. This isn’t just respect from afar. It’s admiration from someone who has faced the fire and still sees greatness through it.
The Kohli-Konstas Shoulder Bump Incident
For those who missed it, back during Konstas’ electric debut where he smashed 60 off 52 balls, Kohli gave him a not-so-warm welcome with a shoulder bump after an over. The moment went viral.
The ICC slapped Kohli with a 20% match fee penalty and a demerit point for breaching the code of conduct. Konstas didn’t say much then, but he certainly let his bat do the talking.
Now, to hear him call Kohli a "big idol"? That is pure class. The game has got its edge, sure. But moments like these show that the next generation is watching, learning and respecting even when sparks fly on the field.
Will Sam Konstas Cement His Spot As Australia’s Test Opener?
With Marnus Labuschagne dropped and a spot up for grabs, Konstas is set to partner Usman Khawaja as opener in the first Test vs West Indies. It’s a big stage, and a golden chance for the New South Wales teen to nail down a long-term spot.
He is already made headlines with his strokeplay. Now, he is turning heads with his mindset. And if he combines Kohli’s wrists, ABD’s audacity, Smith’s discipline and Buttler’s flamboyance, the cricketing world will have to watch out. Because Sam Konstas looks like he is building himself piece by piece, one idol at a time.
