Northamptonshire opener Ricardo Vasconcelos faced an unusual dismissal on day 3 of the County Championship Division 2 match against Derbyshire.

Batting on 41 off 65 balls, Vasconcelos advanced down the track to Derbyshire captain David Lloyd’s off-spin, attempting a big shot over deep mid-wicket. He missed the ball completely, lost his grip on the bat, which flew towards square leg, and the ball hit the stumps.

This left Northamptonshire at 90-2 after 22.2 overs, with Vasconcelos walking back in doubt.

Despite this setback, Northamptonshire ended the day strongly with a lead of 255 runs in their second innings. Earlier, Rob Keogh’s 220-ball 102 helped them post 422 in their first innings, while Ben Sanderson’s 5-76 restricted Derbyshire to 362.

Northamptonshire, currently seventh in the standings with four draws and one loss from five games, will face Yorkshire next in a match starting on May 24 at Northampton.

On day four, Emilio Gay will resume on 89 not out, with Karun Nair on 37. The team is likely to aim for quick runs and set up a declaration to push for a win.
