Varun Chakaravarthy got a wild-card entry into the Indian Champions Trophy squad and has been included in the game against New Zealand as well. He is expected to make an impact on a slowish pitch in Dubai, but before he could do that, the player made a blunder that resulted in four extra runs for New Zealand.
Varun Chakarvarthy Starts In A Nervy Note On Champions Trophy Debut
It was the second delivery of the fourth over and was a free hit as Hardik Pandya overstepped on the previous delivery. Hardik decided to bowl a slower delivery on length on a Free Hit and Will Young who went for a big hit, mistimed it. The ball went high in the air behind mid on and Varun Chakaravarthy there ran all the way towards the ball, but made a error in judgement as the ball fell in front of him.
The momentum of his run though created more problem as the all deflected off his leg towards the boundary line. The blunder clearly frustrated Hardik Pandya and it was evident in his silent reaction.
New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first and reduced India to 30 for three. India did recover courtesy fifty by Shreyas Iyer and other important contributions and managed to reach a competitve total of 249.
Matt Henry was the wrecker-in-chief and bagged five crucial wickets, putting New Zealand in a driver's seat at the end of the first half of the final group stage game.
