In a remarkable achievement, ace pacer Trent Boult has attained a historic feat, becoming the first New Zealand bowler to scalp fifty wickets in ICC World Cups. The veteran speedster unlocked the landmark during New Zealand's ongoing World Cup clash against Sri Lanka at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Opening the bowling alongside Tim Southee, Boult claimed the valuable scalps of Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama in an over to push Sri Lanka on the back foot.

With Mendis' dismissal, he achieved the aforementioned milestone, scripting his name in history books alongside Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath, Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Starc, who have more than 50 wickets in World Cups.

After getting rid of Mendis, the left-arm pacer removed the in-form Samarawickrama to wreak havoc in the Lankan camp. If that wasn't enough, he trapped Charith Asalanka plumb in front of the stumps, leaving Sri Lanka in disarray.

Most World Cup wickets for New Zealand

  • Trent Boult- 52*
  • Tim Southee- 38
  • Jacob Oram- 36
  • Daniel Vettori- 36
  • Chris Harris- 32

Riding on Boult's onslaught, New Zealand have claimed the driving seat in this must-win game, reducing Sri Lanka to 74 for five as of writing. Although Kusal Perera struck a blazing fifty, his untimely dismissal has left Sri Lanka tottering in the match.
