Young Worcestershire paceman Tom Taylor stunned Somerset opener George Thomas with an absolute corker in a crucial Group A match of the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup 2024 season. Defending 264, the speedster generated an insane in-swinger off the first ball of the Somerset run-chase, and clipped George’s off-stump to send the in-form opener packing ball to the pavilion for a duck.

Earlier in the match, Tom Taylor also top-scored for Worcestershire by smacking 73 runs from just 65 deliveries with seven boundaries and three sixes.

Emboldened by his 73-run defiance with the bat, Worcestershire all-rounder Tom Taylor sent down a searing in-swinger to George Thomas off the first ball of the Somerset run-chase later in the game. The pace demon managed to clip George’s off-stump, as Somerset slipped to 0-1 in 0.1 overs in a challenging chase of 264.

Unfortunately, Tom Taylor’s sublime opening strike remained his only wicket of the day as Somerset romped past their 264-run target with five wickets and 33 balls to spare. Opener Andrew Umeed made 44 runs from 55 balls while number three Lewis Goldsworthy top-scored in the chase with a match-defining 95. Wicketkeeper James Rew also cracked 70 runs from just 60 balls and unbeaten batters Archie Vaughan (31* off 24 balls) and Ben Green (23* off 19 balls) conjured handy runs at the death.

Tom Taylor, meanwhile, finished with expensive figures of 1-50 from eight overs. Earlier in the match, the all-rounder slapped 73 swift runs to turbo-charge Worcestershire innings to a competitive 263-run total.

Regardless of Worcestershire’s defeat, they remain at number two on the nine-team Group A standings of the Royal London One-Day Cup 2024 season. Under the leadership of Jake Libby, they have so far secured four wins and two defeats from six outings.
