In the highly-hyped clash between Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24, star batter Steve Smith, playing for the latter franchise, produced a rare blip at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Smith, who is playing his first BBL 13 clash, managed to score a first-ball duck against former Test opener David Warner's Thunder in the Sydney derby.

Smith, facing his first ball, played the pull shot from outside the off-stump off Daniel Sams' bowling, which found the only fielder in the deep, Nathan McAndrew, who pounced a simple catch.

Interestingly, Smith, who opened for Sixers, will also open the batting for Australia in the upcoming first Test against West Indies, replacing the highly-successful Warner, who played his last red-ball match against Pakistan last week.

The former Australia Test captain has battered across positions from No.9 to No.3 but has never faced the new ball in his 105 red-ball career.

Prior to the Sydney derby, Smith found time and played tennis with Serbian legend Novak Djokovic on Thursday ahead of the commencement of the first grand slam of the 2024 Australian Open.

As of writing, the Sixers have managed to put on 80 runs, with the loss of three wickets, and have Josh Phillippe and Jordan Silk batting on 37* and 6* in the middle.

While Thunder are placed seventh in the BBL 2023-24 points table, Sixers occupy the third spot.
