Even in a contest filled with fierce competition and riveting cricket, it was the immense global admiration for Indian batter, Virat Kohli, that stood out during the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four clash between India and Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Amid the electrifying atmosphere and sea of local supporters, a Sri Lankan fan was spotted holding a poster with a crowned image of Kohli, affectionately dubbed 'King Kohli', garnering significant traction on various social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the on-field narrative told a slightly different story. Kohli, who has transformed the R. Premadasa Stadium into his personal playground with four consecutive ODI centuries, was trapped early, scoring just 3. The young Sri Lankan prodigy, Dunith Wellalage, was the man responsible for Kohli’s rare blip as he got him caught at short mid-wicket.

Despite this hiccup, Team India displayed their depth and resilience. The dynamic duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation with an 80-run stand. The Sri Lankan spin brigade, however, had other plans. Spearheaded by Wellalage, who clinched five wickets, and bolstered by Charith Asalanka's four dismissals, India was bowled out for 213.

In response, Sri Lanka's batting reply was thwarted early on by India's formidable pace attack. By the end of the 26th over, the hosts found themselves reeling at 99/6.

A resilient partnership between Wellalage and Dhananjaya de Silva briefly threatened a comeback, but India's spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja ensured victory for their side. With Yadav clinching four wickets and Jadeja bagging two, Sri Lanka's batting order eventually collapsed at 172.
