The high-voltage Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 final at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi saw an unexpected turn as the in-form Delhi Capitals Women batter, Jemimah Rodrigues was sent back to the pavillion without troubling the scorers.

The match, which had been off to a flying start thanks to Shafali Verma's explosive 44 off 27 deliveries, took a sudden dip when Rodrigues, who had been in sterling form throughout the tournament, was dismissed for a two-ball duck.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Delhi Capitals Women got off to a flyer. Verma’s innings had set the stage, but her dismissal by Sophie Molineux, who would soon become Rodrigues' nemesis, marked the beginning of a massive shift.

Molineux, riding high on the confidence from dismissing Verma, delivered a stunning ball to Rodrigues. The ball, a beautifully tossed-up delivery on middle and leg, drifted in and spun away just enough to deceive Jemimah Rodrigues.

The length wasn't conducive for the sweep, a shot Rodrigues might have considered her best bet against such a delivery. In the end, she missed the ball entirely, leaving her off stump in disarray—a sight that sent shockwaves through the Delhi camp.

Notably, Sophie Molineux’s double whammy, which also saw Alice Capsey walking back for a golden duck, put the Delhi Capitals Women in a tight spot at 80-4 after 13 overs.

With the team in a pickle, all eyes have turned to captain Jess Jonassen and Marizanne Kapp, who are left to steady the ship. The task is clear: to anchor the innings and steer the team towards a competitive total.
