Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav failed to get going against England in the first T20I of the five-match series at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Wednesday, January 22. Batting at number three and arriving into the middle after the fall of Sanju Samson, the T20 expert faced just a couple of deliveries off Jofra Archer before top-edging one towards England wicketkeeper Phil Salt.
Making his way back to the dugout without scoring a run, Suryakumar recorded the fourth duck of his 79-match T20I career for Team India.
Suryakumar Yadav fails in small chase for India
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a three-ball duck by tearaway English paceman Jofra Archer inside the opening powerplay. The 34-year-old made his way into the middle following the wicket of a raging Sanju Samson in the fifth over of the Indian innings, before he became Archer’s second victim of the over as the ‘Men in Blue’ slipped to 41-2 in a chase of 133.
Earlier in the match, Team India bowlers enveloped the entire English innings for just 132 in 20 overs. Captain Jos Buttler himself carted 68 of those runs 44 balls, while the rest of the visiting line-up conjured the remaining 53 runs, excluding 11 extras.
For India, new ball seamer Arshdeep Singh struck twice in the opening powerplay with the wickets of both England openers. In doing so, Arshdeep went past Yuzvendra Chahal’s tally to become India’s most successful T20I bowler of all time.
Hardik Pandya and Indian vice-captain Axar Patel also claimed two wickets each in the innings during their respective four-over spells, while leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy unfurled the spell of the match with astonishing figures of 3-23.
In response, Team India got off to a flier despite losing two wickets inside the first five overs. Abhishek Sharma’s rowdy start at the top ensured the hosts raced to 63-2 at the end of the opening powerplay.
