Sunil Narine, fresh from his 32-ball 71 against Punjab Kings, failed to sustain his prolific run with the bat against Delhi Capitals. 

Opening the innings for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) alongside fellow in-form batter Phil Salt, Narine managed to conjure just 15 runs in match number 47 of the IPL 2024 season at the Eden Gardens.

The West Indies-based opener was dismissed as he attempted to smack Axar Patel’s length delivery out of the ground during KKR’s run-chase of 154.


Sunil Narine registers rare failure, out for 15

Chasing 154, Sunil Narine scored just 15 runs in the powerplay overs as opening partner Phil Salt did all the heavy lifting to blitz KKR to 79-0.

Just as Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant employed Axar Patel to bowl the seventh over of the KKR innings, Narine attempted to smack the spinner’s length delivery for a six only to get holed out by Jake Fraser-McGurk at deep midwicket.

Shortly after removing Sunil Narine for a 10-ball 15, Axar Patel also cleaned up a rampaging Phil Salt for 68 as KKR slipped from 79-0 to 96-2 in the space of two overs. 

Rinku Singh also followed suite as he was accounted by Delhi Capitals’ new-ball speedster Lizaad Williams at 100-3.

Despite the three-wicket burst orchestrated by the Capitals, the Shreyas Iyer-led KKR troops still managed to overhaul their target with relative ease. The captain himself stroked a well-compiled 50-plus stand with number five batter Venkatesh Iyer.

Earlier in the match, the KKR bowlers restricted the Delhi Capitals line-up to just 153-9, thanks to Varun Chakravarthy’s bowling exploits and some timely breakthroughs from Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana.
