Mumbai and Maharashtra went up against each other in a high voltage clash of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. This match was being played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. 

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Mumbai won the toss and opted to field first in the game. Maharashtra did not geta an ideal start as they lost their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad early in the innings. After this, there were a couple of small partnerships in the innings but soon the team faced a collpase. In a span of eigh runs Maharashtra lost four wickets and it was looking they would not be able to post a fighting total on the board.

However, Azim Kazi and Nikhil Naik resurrected the innings for the team and got them to a fighting total. At the end of the 20 overs, Maharashtra managed to post a total of 171/9 and it looked like a competitive one at the venue. 

As Mumbai started their chase, they lost Prithivi Shaw in the first over and were under pressure. However, Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane got together after the fall of the first two wickets and propelled the team towards the target.

The captain of Mumbai, Shreyas Iyer, particularly grabbed eyes with his audacious shot making as he thrashed the bowlers to all the parts of the park.  He played a dazzling knock of 71 runs from 39 deliveries and his innings was decorated with three sixes and eight fours. This knock came just after he scored a sparkling 130 off 57 deliveries against Goa in the last game.

Shreyas Iyer Grabbed Attention With A Mega Deal In IPL 2025 Auction

Due to Shreyas Iyer's knock, Mumbai won the game rather convincingly with five wickets in hand and about two overs remaining in the game. Notable, Iyer's IPL 2025 auction price grabbed a lot attention. He was sold for a hefty sum of INR 26.75 Cr to the Punjab Kings. 

Shreyas Iyer was the second most expensive player in the IPL 2025 mega auction after Rishabh Pant, who fetched INR 27 Cr. The huge sum that he got set his critics into motion that he was overpriced and should not have got such a mega deal. However, with these two knocks he must have shut his crictics and justified his high price tag.
