Pakistan speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Nahid Rana shared a heartening moment in the sixth match of Bangladesh Premier League 2024/25 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium today. Although brief, the moment comprised an accomplished international cricketer acknowledging his opponent’s skills during a match.
Having already hit a four off Nahid Rana on the second legal delivery that he faced, it all happened after the last delivery of the 14th over when Afridi aimed to create some room for himself to hit through the off-side. However, with the right-arm bowler following the left-handed batter whilst bowling round the stumps, the latter had no option than to defend the ball.
Shaheen Acknowledges Nahid's Brilliance
What followed was an exchange of smiles from both the players before a fist-bump resulting in Shaheen Afridi rubbing Rana’s hair in praise. While the gesture came across as a senior batter providing confidence to a junior bowler, readers must note that Afridi is only 30 months elder to Rana. That being said, he has played as many as 156 more international matches than him. Watch the instance here from 6th minute in the video.
Contrasting Returns For Afridi And Rana
Notwithstanding the vast difference in their experience with regard to the highest level, both Afridi and Rana have had a contrasting season thus far. Shaheen went wicketless in the first match, while Nahid has been breathing fire.
Meanwhile, Shaheen scored runs with the bat in the first match, but failed to do so in the recently concluded match.
Playing for Rangpur Riders, Rana was the joint-highest wicket-taker until today. Post a double-header Thursday, he is currently at the third position due to Durbar Rajshahi’s Taskin Ahmed registering career-best bowling figures in the first match of the day.
While Rana’s six wickets in three matches have come at an average of 11.66, an economy rate of 6.36 and a strike rate of 11, Afridi has leaked 64 runs in seven overs across two outings for Fortune Barishal till now.
