Nothing is going Gujarat Giants' way in the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL 2023). On Saturday, the Sneh Rana-led unit bombarded into a force named Delhi Capitals, who literally thwacked them at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy. DC's showstoppers in the contest against Gujarat were Shafali Verma and Marizanne Kapp.

Followed by Kapp's sensational five-wicket haul, the opening maestro Verma got the steering  in her hands and drove the Delhi team past the winning crease.

In chase of 106 runs, the 19-year-old came out blistering in her gung-ho fashion with a motivation to end today's play as soon as she could. In her fierce knock against GG, Verma notched up an unbeaten 76 off just 28 deliveries, in which she clobbered ten fours and five maximums, helping Delhi chase down the target in 7.1 overs.

No Gujarat bowler was excused as the explosive batter went behind each and every bowler. Although she started off cautiously in the first over the chase, she blasted the most against the legendary Ash Gardner and the left-arm spin of Tanuja Kanwar.

In the process, Verma smashed a 19-ball fifty - the second-fastest in the league - before ending the chase with a 28-ball 76*. Meg Lanning, who is currently the Orange Cap holder, played second fiddle to the young dasher, scoring her 21 off 15 deliveries.

Earlier in the day, the South African all-rounder, Kapp, registered her first fifer in the WPL, snapping the top four batters inside the powerplay and completing her five-wicket haul in 6.3 overs.

If not for Kim Garth and Georgia Wareham's resistance with the bat, the Giants would have bundled out way earlier.

Shafali may have won her hearts with her explosive knock, but Kapp got adjourned the Player of the Match award for dismantling the GG batting.

Delhi are sitting in the second spot and will next face Bangalore on Monday at the same venue.
