Ashleigh Gardner, the reputed all-rounder of the Australian women's cricket team, has attributed their narrow five-run triumph over India in the semi-final of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup to their exceptional fielding.

During the crucial match, the reigning champions' catching and agility in the field were a cut above their opponents, as they held their nerve and secured a place in the final on Sunday.

Tahlia McGrath and Ellyse Perry seized outfield catches towards the end of India's run chase, which helped the Australian team win the game.

Additionally, the team made two run-outs, including the vital wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur, showcasing yet another outstanding fielding performance.

Nevertheless, it was Perry's efforts in the outfield that stood out the most, as the veteran cricketer threw herself around the fence to prevent what would have been certain boundaries on two occasions, which ultimately made the difference, according to Gardner.

After receiving the Player of the Match award for her quick-fire 31 and figures of 2 for 37, Gardner applauded the team's class in the field, adding that they constantly strive to be the best fielding team in the world.

Gardner commended the veteran all-rounder's exceptional performance on the boundary line, which she believes saved the team six runs.

She also emphasised the importance of pivotal moments in the game and how the team's fielding skills distinguish them from their opponents.

The off-spinner explained that the Australian team takes fielding seriously and measures their performance through key performance indicators (KPIs). She highlighted the subjective nature of fielding and how the team motivates each other to improve.

Gardner also emphasised the team's athletic ability and pride in being fit and strong, which she believes is a significant factor in their fielding success.

The Meg Lanning-led side will now play the final against the winner of the second semi-final between England and South Africa.

With the kind of scintillating form the Aussies are in and considering their vast experience of playing big finals, their opponents will have to produce a sensational performance to dethrone the champions.
