Rohit Sharma led India’s yet another powerplay charge, this time taking Australia to the cleaners in the final of the 2023 World Cup. The dashing opener thumped Australia’s new-ball bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood with elegant fours and soaring sixes at the Narendra Modi Stadium, before he was holed out by Travis Head off the bowling of Glenn Maxwell in the 10th over of the Indian innings.

Following Rohit Sharma’s early batting bombardment, Australian captain Pat Cummins employed part-timer Glenn Maxwell to bowl the final over of the opening powerplay. Maximizing the field restrictions, the Indian skipper launched Maxwell for a huge six over long-on, and followed it up with an imperious boundary through the covers off the very next delivery.

In pursuit of additional powerplay runs, Sharma miscued one up in the air in the same over, and a vigilant Travis Head held on to a sensational diving catch while running backwards from cover to hand Maxwell a crucial breakthrough in the contest of the game.

Sharma’s dismissal worsened India’s troubles at 76-2 off 9.4 overs. Sheyas Iyer made his way to the crease where he subsequently failed to pouch on his purple patch, considering the number four batter edged one to wicketkeeper Josh Inglis off Australian captain Pat Cummins in just the third ball of his innings.

India eventually reached 101-3 in 16 overs by the time of their first drinks break, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul still batting at the crease.
