Day 1 of the ongoing India vs Australia 4th Test match in Melbourne saw some heated moments on the field. While debutant Australian batter Sam Konstas impressed with his aggressive batting, it was Virat Kohli who got into a bit of a clash with him. Kohli tried to get under Konstas' skin with a shoulder push, but things quickly escalated, leading to a brief altercation.
However, the real drama unfolded when Indian captain Rohit Sharma had a tense exchange with Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne. Labuschagne had been batting solidly and frustrating the Indian bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah. As the game went on, Rohit became visibly frustrated with the lack of wickets and was especially annoyed with Labuschagne's running on the pitch.
Rohit warned Labuschagne about damaging the protected area of the pitch, a part that must remain intact for the bowler's benefit. Running on this area is against the rules and can result in penalties. Despite the warning, Labuschagne continued to run in the protected zone, forcing Rohit to issue another warning.
What Does The Rule Say?
According to the rules, batters should avoid running on the protected area, as it can cause damage to the pitch. If a team violates this rule twice, they can be penalized with five runs. Even after the third warning, Labuschagne was unfazed, continuing to bat well. However, he was removed by Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar after scoring a solid 72 runs off 145 balls, including 7 boundaries.
Meanwhile, Australia ensured they put on a great show on Day 1. At stumps, Australia's score read 311/6, with Steve Smith (68) and Pat Cummins (8) remaining unbeaten at the crease.
