When Rishabh Pant is in the mood, you can manifest fireworks from left, right, and centre. The swashbuckling left-handed wicket-keeper batter seemed to be having that particular outing during the all-important Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test match between India and Australia, taking place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

More importantly, it was Pat Cummins, Australia’s captain, whom Pant targetted to get things going with a bang. The lofted shot came during the 49th over of India’s innings when Pant charged down the track to smash Cummins almost out of the park until the ball landed just behind the boundary ropes for four runs.

How Much Runs India Need To Score More To Avoid Follow-On At MCG?

At stumps on Day 2, India were five down and could only muster 164 runs. They were 153/2 at one point before a terrible mix-up between Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal triggered a collapse. At this point, they have reached 181/5, still requiring 94 more runs to avoid a follow-on.

It is important to mention that India would desperately need to stage a fightback in order to keep themselves alive for a WTC 2025 final race. To make that happen, both Ravindra Jadeja and Pant, batting on 4* and 23* respectively, hold the key. Even though they still have Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar to come, the onus will be on Pant and Jadeja to steady the ship.
