Pat Cummins committed a DRS blunder [Source: @gavaskar_theman/X]
Australian captain Pat Cummins and wicketkeeper Alex Carey teamed-up to take one of the worst DRS calls on day three of the fourth Test against India at Melbourne Cricket Ground. After posting a whopping 474-run total on the board, Australia reduced India to 164 for five before stumps on day 2.
Two unbeaten batters Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja resumed India's innings on day three, with Australian captain Pat Cummins starting the proceedings for the hosts. In the second over of his new spell, the Australian great committed a DRS blunder, prompted by none other than wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
The incident occurred during the 49th over of India's first innings when Cummins introduced himself into the attack to break the partnership between Jadeja and Pant. After conceding a boundary off his first ball, the right-arm pacer bowled a back-of-a-length delivery that bounced sharply after pitching around the off stump.
Although the southpaw shouldered his arms and left the ball, Carey, followed by Cummins, appealed for a caught behind. They were convinced that Pant had gloved the ball while leaving it. However, as they opted for the DRS, the replay showed a clear gap between bat and glove, with Pant surviving at the MCG.
India Need 100 Runs To Avoid Follow On
Although Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli's outstanding partnership bailed India out of trouble following two quick wickets, the dismissal of both in quick succession helped Australia bounce back. As of writing, the visitors were 175 for five, with Pant and Jadeja batting on 17* and 4*, respectively.
