The concluding passage of play on Day 4 at the MCG was a tough pill to swallow for Team India. Just when Jasprit Bumrah thought he’d nailed Nathan Lyon and wrapped up Australia’s innings, fate had other plans.
Bumrah’s No-Ball Costs India as KL Rahul’s Catch Goes Unrewarded
A no-ball call turned joy into frustration, and the Aussies made the most of it, leaving India scratching their heads as Stumps were called. It happened in the final over of the day.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled a peach of a delivery that Lyon edged to third slip. KL Rahul fumbled initially but pulled off a brilliant recovery by clutching the ball with his legs. It was one of those “wow” moments, and India started celebrating what seemed like the final wicket.
But the umpire signalled a no-ball. Bumrah had overstepped, and just like that, Lyon was back at the crease. The frustration was written all over the faces of the Indian players.
Aussie Tail Stings Again
If that wasn’t enough, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland added insult to injury. On the very next ball, the pair brought up a 50-run partnership, frustrating the Indian bowlers further. By Stumps, their last-wicket stand had swollen to 55 runs, taking Australia’s lead to 333.
Earlier in the day, India’s bowlers had Australia on the ropes at 91/6. Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja were breathing fire, and it looked like the Aussies wouldn’t even cross 150.
But the script flipped once again. The lower-order dug in, with Lyon and Boland showing the kind of fight that’s been the story of this series. From 91/6, Australia clawed their way to 228/9, leaving India to rue missed chances.
India's First-Innings Woes
India’s day had started on a rough note as well. Resuming their first innings, they were bowled out for 369, falling short of Australia’s 474. While Nitish Reddy impressed with a gutsy 114 and Washington Sundar chipped in with a hard-fought 50, the rest of the lineup struggled to leave a mark.
What Awaits On Day 5?
Heading into Day 5, India finds themselves in a corner. They need to wrap up the Aussie innings early and then pull off something extraordinary with the bat to save this Test. With a massive lead of 333 already on the board, the Aussies are well and truly in control. India needs a miracle to turn this around and retain the BGT.
