Pakistan team overcame their early jitters to hand Hong Kong a 68-run defeat in the second quarter-final of the ongoing 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. After Aamer Jamal’s 16-ball 41 lifted Pakistan to a competitive 160 off their 20 overs, Khushdil Shah and others restricted the Hong Kong batters to just 92.

Despite Pakistan’s comprehensive all-round performance, the match will be remembered for a hilarious wicketkeeping blunder from ‘Men in Green’ glovesman Rohail Nazir. During the fourth over of the Hong Kong innings, the 21-year-old spilled an easy stumping chance to reprieve senior batter Babar Hayat early in the run-chase.

Pakistan overcome Nazir’s blunder with a win

Hong Kong, in pursuit of 161, lost opener Muhammad Khan within the second over of their run-chase. His dismissal paved way for senior Hong Kong batter Babar Hayat into the crease, as he took guard against a charged-up Arafat Minhas.

A couple of overs later, Minhas seemingly dismissed Hayat via Rohail Nazir’s smart work behind the stumps. While initial reaction indicated that the batsman has been stumped, television replays showed that the ball was never inside Nazir’s gloves at the time when he clipped the stumps.

Hayat, who had left the field after the original decision, was called back to the crease after third umpire reversed the same.

Babar Hayat went on to top-score for Hong Kong in the innings, however, his near run-a-ball 29 proved too little for his side in the end.

Pakistan, on the other hand, stormed into the semi-finals of the 2022 Asian Games owing to their dominant win.
