The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons are facing the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the first match of the CPL 2024 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The Patriots won the toss in this game and put the Falcons to bat.

Fakhar Zaman gave a good foundation to the Falcons

The Falcons did not have a great start to their innings as they lost Teddy Bishop in the second over of the match. However, Fakhar Zaman played a counter attacking knock at this stage and bailed the team out of the situation. But after the dismissal of Zaman, the Falcons went through a dull period where the scoring rate went down and they lost some crucial wickets.

One of these wickets was that of their wicketkeeper and one of the mainstays in the batting, Sam Billings. The English wicket-keeper batter was looking settled at 18 off 14 when he decided to up the ante in the 14th over.

Odean Smith's brilliance ended the stay of Sam Billings

On the last delivery of the over, Dominic Drakes bowled a back of a good length delivery around the middle and leg stump. Sam Billings played a pick up shot towards the backward square leg. Although, Billings did not make the right connection, the ball was flying over the fence after taking the top edge of his bat. However, Odean Smith in the deep and brought down curtains on Billings's stay. Smith caught the ball and realised that he will go over the fence, so he immediately released it and then came back into the play to complete the catch.

Odean Smith's effort might remind a lot of the viewers of the brilliant effort that Suryakumar Yadav showed in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 to dismiss David Miller and take India to the title win.

The Falcons were in a spot of bother at this stage. However, Jewel Andrew, the 17-year-old wonder kid played a brilliant knock of 50 from 30 deliveries and got his team to fighting total. Fabian Allen (24 off 17) played a great supporting role to the young man and the Falcons were able to post 163/4 at the end of their 20 overs.

At the time of writing, the Patriots are stationed at 71/2 from 8 overs in the chase.
